Losing 100 pounds is a remarkable feat that takes hard work and dedication to a healthy lifestyle. I should know, I lost 100 pounds on my own in one year when I was 14 years old.

What Is Loose Skin After 100 Pound Weight Loss?

Loose skin is exactly what it sounds like: skin that is loose. Loose skin often occurs as we age and the skin loses elasticity, leading to the appearance of jiggly or even wrinkly, paper-like skin texture.

However, loose skin can also occur in young people after significant weight loss. As the body sheds excess fat, the skin that once stretched to accommodate the extra weight may not shrink back to its original size and shape.

Understanding Loose Skin After 100 Pound Weight Loss

When you lose a substantial amount of weight, the skin’s elasticity is put to the test. Skin elasticity refers to the ability of the skin to stretch and then return to its original shape.

Factors such as age, genetics, the duration of obesity, and the speed of weight loss can influence how well the skin bounces back after weight loss. In many cases, particularly after significant weight loss, the skin may not fully retract, resulting in excess or loose skin in various parts of the body, including the abdomen, arms, thighs, and face.

Who Is Most at Risk for Loose Skin?

Not everyone will have loose skin after 100 pound weight loss, but certain things affect your probability. Typically the more weight you lose, the more at risk you are for loose skin. Your risk is even higher if you have been overweight or obese for a longer time.

Your age plays a factor too. The older you are, the less likely your skin will snap back . That’s because your collagen levels naturally decrease with age.

Finally, your genetics play a role as well. Some people are more prone to loose skin than others. Your genetics may also determine where you are more likely to have loose skin on your body.

Typically, loose skin will occur in areas where you carried most of your fat. For example, if you carry most of your fat in your abdomen, you may be more at risk for loose skin in that area versus anywhere else on your body.

Can Loose Skin After 100 Pound Weight Loss Be Prevented?

Loose skin can be attributed to loss of elasticity or the breakdown of collagen. There are some methods that may be helpful for reducing your risk of loose skin such as lotions or creams that may help preserve skin elasticity.  However, there is no solid evidence that lotions and creams can improve skin elasticity.

It’s also possible that taking collagen supplements may help increase your collagen levels therefore improve your rate of skin cell repair. I’ve also heard that dry brushing skin can help to facilitate skin cell turnover, thus possibly improving skin elasticity.

However, based on my experience, I don’t believe there is any way to completely avoid or prevent loose skin. But I do know there are ways to cope with loose skin and reduce its appearance.

But first I think it’s important to understand the difference between loose skin vs. fat.

Loose Skin or Fat?

Unfortunately, sometimes loose skin can be confused with excess fat.

When you lose weight, you can also lose muscle mass. Muscle is responsible for giving your body shape and structure. It takes up less space in your body than fat, meaning you can lose muscle and gain fat while remaining the same body weight.

Sometimes what people mistake for loose skin is actually excess fat they still have left to lose, even if they are at a normal body weight.

So, what does loose skin after 100 pound weight loss look like? How can you tell whether you have loose skin or fat?

Loose Skin Vs Fat

The easiest way to determine whether you have loose skin or fat is to do the pinch test. Pinch the skin around the back of your hand (an area with relatively lower fat). It should feel more paper-like than fleshy, that’s because you’re pinching mostly skin.

Now pinch your fingers around your loose skin. If you feel an inch or more of flesh between your fingertips, you’re not dealing with just loose skin. You’re dealing with excess fat.

Of course, loose skin and excess body fat can exist at the same time. The more excess fat you have, the more apparent your loose skin will be. By losing fat (and ideally building more muscle), you may be able to reduce the appearance of your loose or flabby bits.

Coping with Loose Skin After 100 Pound Weight Loss

While loose skin after weight loss is a physical reminder of the incredible journey you’ve been on, I know firsthand that it’s not ideal. Of course, we should never be ashamed of our bodies, loose skin and all.

However, it can be frustrating working so hard to get healthy and yet still not feeling entirely comfortable in your body. Fortunately, there are some ways you may be able to reduce the appearance of loose skin.

Strength Training

Strength training includes any activity (like lifting weights) that focuses on improving your strength through building muscle. Strength training is an excellent form of exercise that can help to improve your overall body composition while helping you increase your metabolism and lose fat.

Losing fat and building muscle will help reshape your body, which can help reduce the appearance of saggy skin.

Body Shapers

Body shapers are undergarments that can do wonders for smoothing out the appearance of loose skin underneath your clothing. Body shapers can help cinch in your waist, thighs, arms, etc., and give you the appearance of a firmer body.

Surgery

If your loose skin is severe, you may consider surgery to have it removed. My personal opinion would be to work on reshaping your body through exercise and diet first.

However, everyone’s loose skin journey will be different. If body recomposition through diet and exercise isn’t effective for you, there is nothing wrong with considering surgery.

Just be sure to talk to a medical professional beforehand to thoroughly understand the risks vs. benefits of loose skin removal surgery.

Loose Skin After 100 Pound Weight Loss: The Takeaway

Dealing with loose skin after 100 pound weight loss is common and sometimes unavoidable. While the appearance of loose skin is frustrating, remember that it signifies the hard work you’ve done to get healthy and transform your life.

Loose skin is nothing to be ashamed of but if it severely impacts your confidence, options are available to reduce loose skin’s appearance, including surgery. Whichever option you choose, remember that you did something amazing and no amount of loose skin can take that away.
