Why You’re Closer to Success Than You Think
We hear it all the time: The market is oversaturated. There’s too much competition. Everyone is trying to do the same thing.
Whether you’re trying to start a business, become an actor, build a social media following, or achieve a personal goal, it’s easy to look around and feel like the odds are stacked against you.
But here’s something I’ve come to realize: You actually aren’t competing with nearly as many people as you think.
Yes, there are millions of people who want the same things you do. But how many of those people are actually willing to do what it takes to achieve them?
That’s where the competition starts getting a whole lot smaller.

Most People Aren’t Willing to Do What It Takes
Think about how many people start businesses every year, only to close their doors a short time later. We often blame these failures on competition or oversaturated markets.
But competition isn’t always the problem.
Sometimes business owners simply don’t know what they’re doing. They lack experience, refuse to listen to people who know better, or aren’t prepared for the amount of work required to build something successful.
I’ve witnessed this firsthand working in the hospitality industry. I’ve seen business owners make terrible decisions while ignoring the advice of experienced employees who actually understood the business.
The same thing happens in creative industries.
I remember hearing a casting professional explain that while thousands of aspiring actors audition for roles, relatively few are actually good. So when someone talented walks through the door, they stand out.
I’ve heard literary agents say something similar about aspiring writers. They receive countless submissions, but the majority simply aren’t very good.
The point is, just because a lot of people are trying to do something doesn’t mean they’re all equally qualified, talented, or prepared to succeed.

Talent Alone Isn’t Enough
Of course, being good at what you do matters. But talent is only one piece of the puzzle.
We’ve all seen incredibly talented people who never achieve the success they deserve. Meanwhile, people with seemingly average abilities become wildly successful.
Why?
Because success isn’t always about being the best. Sometimes it’s about being the person who keeps showing up.
You can be the most talented writer in the world, but if you stop submitting your work after a few rejections, nobody may ever read it.
You can be an incredible actor, but if you’re unwilling to audition, take criticism, or put yourself out there, your talent won’t get you very far.
And you can have a brilliant business idea, but if you’re unwilling to work through the difficult years, you’ll never find out what it could have become.
This is why I believe audacity, discipline, and persistence are just as important as talent.
You have to believe in yourself enough to keep trying, even when nobody else believes in you.

The People Who Don’t Quit Have an Advantage
Here’s what happens when you start narrowing down the competition.
First, eliminate everyone who wants something but never actually tries.
Then eliminate the people who try but give up after their first few failures.
Next, eliminate the people who aren’t willing to improve, accept criticism, or put in the necessary work.
Suddenly, that enormous pool of competition becomes much smaller.
And if you’re someone who not only has the drive and persistence to keep going, but also has genuine talent and the willingness to improve?
You’re already putting yourself in a much stronger position.
There’s a saying I love: You can’t beat someone who doesn’t quit.
I think there’s a lot of truth to that.

Don’t Let Other People’s Failures Determine Your Future
I think about this in relation to my own weight loss journey.
We’ve all heard the discouraging statistics about how many people regain the weight they’ve lost. But those statistics don’t tell us everything about the individuals involved, their circumstances, or the methods they used.
When I lost 100 pounds, I never considered the possibility that I would simply go back to my old lifestyle. I understood that maintaining my results would require maintaining different habits.
More than 20 years later, I’ve kept the weight off.
And that experience taught me something that applies to practically every area of life: If you want different results, you have to be willing to become someone who does things differently.
You cannot let someone else’s experience convince you that your own goals are impossible.

Your Biggest Competition Might Be Yourself
If you’re someone with big dreams, someone who wants more out of life, you’re already doing something many people never do: you’re considering what’s possible beyond your current circumstances.
But wanting something isn’t enough.
You have to stop allowing doubt, rejection, and other people’s opinions to determine what you’re capable of achieving.
You have to be willing to put yourself out there, even when you’re afraid. You have to recognize your weaknesses, improve your skills, and develop the discipline to keep showing up.
And most importantly, you have to be willing to continue when things aren’t happening as quickly as you’d hoped.
Because the truth is, you don’t have to be the smartest, the most talented, or the most naturally gifted person in the room to succeed.
You just have to be willing to do what so many others won’t.
Have the audacity to try. Have the humility to improve. Have the discipline to keep going.
And remember: your competition is probably a lot smaller than you think.
